Spring Magic in Southern Illinois: Your Guide to Outdoor Adventures
Spring is finally here in Southern Illinois, and there’s no better time to explore the natural beauty right outside our door at Shawnee Trails Lodging in Goreville. If you’re looking for the perfect spring getaway that combines comfort with adventure, you’ve found it!
Why Stay at Shawnee Trails Lodging?
Our cozy cabins in Goreville, Illinois offer the perfect home base for your Southern Illinois adventures. We’re literally steps away from Ferne Clyffe State Park and just 12 miles from Marion, Illinois. With easy access to Interstates 24 and 57, you can explore everything the region has to offer without long drives.
After a day of hiking and exploring, you’ll love coming back to our comfortable cabins with fully-equipped kitchens, free WiFi, and plenty of outdoor space for the kids to play. Our deluxe cabins are perfect for families and groups, with some featuring two bathrooms (trust me, that’s a game-changer when everyone’s muddy from the trails!).
Ferne Clyffe State Park: Our Backyard Paradise
One of the best things about staying with us? Ferne Clyffe State Park is less than a mile away! In spring, this hidden gem really shines:
Waterfall Wonder
The main waterfall is absolutely stunning in spring when it’s flowing at full force. It’s an easy hike to reach it – even my 6-year-old niece made it without complaining (a miracle!). The 100-foot cascade tumbling down moss-covered rocks makes for incredible photos.
Wildflowers Everywhere
The trails at Ferne Clyffe explode with color in spring. You’ll see beautiful wildflowers like trillium, spring beauties, and my personal favorite – the striking purple coneflower. Bring your camera because these natural gardens are seriously Instagram-worthy.
Perfect Picnic Spots
Pack a lunch and enjoy it at one of the many scenic picnic areas. Nothing beats eating outdoors with views of blooming dogwoods and redbuds all around you.
Shawnee National Forest Adventures
When you stay at our Shawnee National Forest cabins, you’re also perfectly positioned to explore the larger Shawnee National Forest. Here are some must-visit spots that really shine in spring:
Garden of the Gods
Just a short drive from Shawnee Trails Lodging, these impressive rock formations offer views that will take your breath away. In spring, the new green growth against the ancient sandstone creates a stunning contrast. The main observation trail is less than a mile long but offers million-dollar views.
Little Grand Canyon
If you’re up for a moderate hike, the Little Grand Canyon trail (about 3 miles) is absolutely worth it in spring. The canyon walls turn into natural waterslides with small seasonal waterfalls, and the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers. My tip: go after a light rain when the waterfalls are flowing but the trail isn’t too muddy.
Jackson Falls
Rock climbers love this spot, but you don’t need to scale cliffs to appreciate its beauty. The short hike to the falls offers awesome views, and in spring, the water flow is at its best.
Wine Trail Relaxation
After hiking, treat yourself to some local flavor at the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. With several wineries within easy driving distance of our Shawnee National Forest cabins, you can sample award-winning wines while enjoying the spring scenery. Blue Sky Vineyard and Owl Creek are personal favorites!
Spring Wildlife Watching
One of the coolest things about spring in Southern Illinois is the wildlife. When you stay at Shawnee Trails Lodging, keep your eyes open for:
- Deer with adorable spotted fawns
- Wild turkeys strutting their stuff
- Box turtles crossing the trails
- Colorful birds returning for the season
- Butterflies fluttering among the wildflowers
I’ve seen all of these right from the porch of our cabins or on nearby trails!
Planning Your Spring Visit to Southern Illinois
Spring in Southern Illinois typically runs from March through May, with April being prime time for wildflowers. The weather can change quickly, so pack layers. And definitely bring waterproof hiking boots – the trails can get muddy after spring rains.
Our Shawnee Trails Lodging cabins in Goreville book up fast for spring weekends, so I recommend reserving early. With our location just off the interstate (I-24 and I-57), you’ll have easy access whether you’re coming from St. Louis, Nashville, Chicago, or anywhere in between.
Beyond Hiking: More Spring Fun Near Our Cabins
When you stay at our Goreville location, you’re perfectly positioned for more than just hiking:
Lake of Egypt
Just a short drive from our cabins, Lake of Egypt offers great spring fishing and boating. The crappie fishing is especially good this time of year!

Spring brings several fun festivals to the area. The Shawnee Hills Wine Festival and the Cairo Spring Festival are worth checking out if your visit coincides.
